HTML
Hypertext Markup Language – a standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages.
- w3schools – Free
- Khan Academy – Free
- Tizag – Free
- Code School – Some free intro courses; subscription needed for the rest. I highly recommend it.
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets – the language for describing the presentation of Web pages, including colors, layout, and fonts.
- w3schools – Free
- Khan Academy – Free
- Tizag – Free
- Learn Layout – Free
- Code School – No free CSS intro; subscription needed.
- csstutorial.net – Pretty dry/technical, but thorough.
CMS
Content Management Systems – a software application or set of related programs that are used to create and manage digital content.
The easiest way to improve at using a CMS is by exploring and messing around firsthand. I’ll leave the Sandbox site up at least through the end of the semester; feel free to log in and try different things (just know that other folks may be doing the same!).
Consider purchasing your own web space – it’s not wildly expensive, and gives you the chance to be fully in charge of everything. Plus, having your own domain name looks really impressive (right? … right??).
WordPress Skills
- WordPress.com – they have a pretty in-depth get-up-and-running tutorial that goes into some more detail than we have time for
- Lynda – Subscription site with a TON of more-in-depth courses
